Unleashing the Power of Fortnite and Discord: A Global Engagement Campaign
Rewarding millions of Fortnite fans on Discord
How do you activate the global communities of two of the biggest brands in gaming? Epic Games wanted to motivate millions of Fortnite fans on Discord and reward them with in-game rewards. Discord saw this as a chance to showcase its video streaming and voice chat features.
Ex Machina developed the 'Find the Force' Discord Campaign, a large scale campaign using its PlayTwo platform to manage a Discord Bot, integrate with the Discord API, track user progress and reward players in-game. All in real-time.
The campaign consisted of two unique activations:
1. Discord Bot & Fortnite Tasks
A Discord Bot that encouraged fans to complete specific tasks in Fortnite and on Discord to earn in-game rewards.
2. Discord Gifts
When Discord users streamed at least 15 minutes on Discord they received a unique URL to claim their unique reward.
Promote Fortnite & Discord
The objective for the campaign was to strengthen the synergy between Fortnite and Discord, encouraging Fortnite players to explore and utilize Discord's extensive features, while rewarding them for their in-game engagement.
- Activate the Fortnite community on Discord by encouraging players to use Discord to stream Fortnite and earn rewards.
- Developed a user-friendly and responsive web interface for easy registration and reward claiming, supporting multiple languages.
- Implemented a system to track individual user progress and reward them in real-time.
- Launched a scalable Discord Bot capable of handling large numbers of servers and users, available in multiple languages.
- Ensured a robust server infrastructure to manage the campaign, in-game progress, Discord bot, and reward data.
- Create a personalized environment for each user to engage with the bot.
- Use Ex Machina's PlayTwo platform to bridge real-time date from Discord API's, Fortnite API's and the campaign.
Complete tasks and get rewarded
The 'Find the Force' Discord Campaign consisted of two activations that combined our PlayTwo campaign platform with a web experience and an interactive Discord Bot. The entire campaign was available globally in 12 languages.
The campaign platform supported two activations:
1. Redemption campaign: Stream 15 minutes to earn the reward
When users streamed Fortnite for at least 15 minutes on Fortnite they received a unique URL in their Gift Inventory in their Discord account. This link opened a web page that allowed users to login with their Epic Account and earn the Fortnite in-game reward.
Our platform was able to create millions of unique URLs that were individually tracked. Once opened the user had 8 hours to complete their registration after which the URL expired. After registration we made sure the reward was delivered to their Fortnite Account.
2. Engage with a Discord Bot to complete tasks
The second activation used a Discord Bot to reach the community directly on Discord. The Bot was installed on all the official Fortnite Discord Servers and could also be installed on other servers by any Discord user.
The Discord Bot was available in 12 different languages making it a truly global campaign. Individual users could overwrite the default language setting to interact in their preferred language. The bot encouraged participants to play Fortnite while talking to their friends on Discord to earn a reward.

Activating a global gaming audience
The 'Find the Force' Discord activation was part of a larger Fortnite campaign that activated millions of players within the Game.
The Discord 'Find the Force' Campaign was launched on 4 May (May the 4th be with you) and immediately saw fans exploring the opportunity to stream Fortnite on Discord to earn their reward. The number of users opening their unique link to claim their reward grew rapidly after the launch.
The redemption campaign motivated many Discord users to discover the ability to live stream directly on Discord to their friends. Users were rewarded using the unique Gift URL making it one of the biggest activations on the platform.
The Discord Bot proved to be a great way to motivate Discord users to jump in the game while using Discord Voice to earn the reward. Besides the official Fortnite Discords Servers the bot was installed on thousands of other servers reaching hundreds of thousands of users.
