App-Based Trivia Game for Upskilling
PwC US asked Ex Machina to help them with a new upskilling and training initiative. Inspired by the success of HQ Trivia they wanted to launch an internal live trivia game for employees. The app-based trivia game allowed employees across departments to participate in regular games about.
Ex Machina developed an engaging platform to acquire critical knowledge in different domains by competing in regular live trivia games. By actively engaging PwC teams and individual players, this app-based, 10-minute trivia game with exciting prizes cultivates digital skills and enhances firm knowledge.
Create an engaging and interactive app-based trivia game
The project objective for the development of the PowerUp platform was to create an engaging and interactive app-based trivia game that would facilitate upskilling and knowledge acquisition for PwC employees.
The objectives for the projects:
- Create a platform to provide a fun and engaging way for employees to obtain knowledge
- Create a reliable server infrastructure and producer console to manage and operate games
- Offer a seamless and user-friendly mobile app experience for players that combines live streaming and interactive overlay to gamify the experience
- Promote teamwork and collaboration through team play in the game
- Livestream games regularly to create a sense of excitement and participation
Live Trivia Game for Corporate Learning at Scale
To achieve these objectives Ex Machina worked together with PWC for the development of the PowerUp platform. The game featured regular sessions with two games per week, focusing on specific digital upskilling topics and strategic initiatives. Players had the option to join existing teams or form teams of their own, fostering collaboration and camaraderie.
The platform consisted of:
- Trivia Game Develop a live app-based trivia game designed for interactive learning.
- Create Team Players can join existing teams or create their own, promoting collaboration.
- Scalable Infrastructure The platform features scalable server infrastructure for gameplay, scores, leaderboards, payouts, rewards, team management, and user profiles.
- User-Friendly App A user-friendly app serves as the platform, offering low latency live streaming and gamification.
- Registration and Notifications Players can register, set up profiles, receive notifications, and participate in live games.
- Live Streaming Games are live-streamed to the app, providing real-time engagement.

An incredible 62% of the over 26,000 unique users played five or more games, while nearly 40 percent engaged in 10 or more games during the season. This defied the typical high drop-off rates observed in other app-based trivia games.
PowerUp! reinforced PwC's team-based culture, the game encouraged collaboration among employees by allowing players to create teams. During the season PowerUp! saw 6,736 teams being created.
The platform played a crucial role in achieving these impressive results, thanks to its reliable server infrastructure, user-friendly interface, and efficient producer console for managing and operating live games.
The project has won four Brandon Hall Excellence Awards in Learning and Development that recognizes the organizations that have successfully developed and deployed programs, strategies, systems, and tools for training and learning that have achieved measurable results.
